Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] wcg for this link to a Time gallery of US Marine women in Afghanistan. Props to the Marine Corps for being so smart in their use of female Marines to interact with the women and children in a population where male soldiers doing that would cause problems. And my admiration for these young women knows no bounds. Serving in the line in a war zone is tough, grindingly hard, sometimes scary work. Doing that as a woman in the Marine Corps in Afghanistan... truly nothing in the rest of life should be difficult, compared to what they are dealing with now.

Someone on a list I read, in response to a discussion of the fine Corps of Marines that our country is blessed with and their...erm, lack of complexity replied:

"We are simple and direct creatures...

See what a little Marine training will do for a rat?"

I like. :-)

With your love of offbeat history and the Corps, you probably know this story already, but

My chum [livejournal.com profile] wcg has been commenting and expanding on posts he wrote last year that present some wonderful historical vignettes.

Last year he wrote this wonderful piece on some of the events of a 19th century election in the District of Columbia.

This year he updated it with some biographical detail on the officer involved.

Fascinating stuff!
