I don't begin to understand what the thinking behind this move was, but it strikes me as foolish, short-sighted, and destructive. Supporters are the bread and butter of a sports franchise, the people who do the work of the sales and marketing staff for them, who voluntarily put their time, effort, and money behind encouraging, celebrating, and advertising the commercial product that is a sports team. There are always going to be small points of friction, but to willfully go out of your way to antagonize and harass the people who literally pay your salary seems simply ridiculous on the face of it.
