As much as I carp about it, one thing I do appreciate about AMU/APUS is that it allows me online access to a number of incredibly useful collections, like Janes, JSTOR, Lexis-Nexis, and portions of Ebscso and Proquest. Worth their weight in gold, those are.

ETA: ...and ABC-Clio (US military history), Praeger (international security), and CIAO (international relations).

I have to go to the British Library for JSTOR. Universities have it here, but most colleges don't as it's expensive. Our librarian thinks it's more for university students, and whilst she's probably right, the staff would like to have it. It was so nice at the BL this week being able to look up all sorts of things in JSTOR.

It's the first time that I've been able to use JSTOR (well, I probably was 20 years ago as an undergrad, if it was around then, but I didn't know I wanted to! ;-)

It's so sweet, after years of doing Google searches and getting hits in JSTOR, only to be told "sorry, no account, no access!"

I don't think it existed when I was an undergraduate. I started on my MA in the late '80s, after I'd taught for a few years. The big bonus I had then was that I could check books out of the university library for six months at a time and then renew them. I liked that. JSTOR is lovely.

I can't really express how much I hated BU, but OMG I loved having access to all those databases. It was wonderful.

I definitely think that is one of the best things about universities . . . the online databases. They are simply FUN to play in.

It wasn't around 20 years ago. It started in 1998-ish. I think.
