So, the first couple of HMGS cons I went to I came back with loads of figures. There are so many dealers, and so many potential new or expanded periods one could get into, it was hard to resist buying loads of stuff.

But after the first or second go, (a) it was kind of unsupportable getting everything that caught one's eye, (b) there was so much one couldn't concentrate or just one thing, (c) the guilt factor of not having painted everything one had gotten the *last* time burgeoned. So I try to buy only things that I know ahead of time I'm going to look for, plus an odd or end that catches my eye. And I've got so much unpainted lead that it's hard to justify buying figures anyway.

So I went looking for some modern 15mm figures (none to be found), some black primer spray (snagged at $5), some terrain (I got a nice walled vineyard and some buildings (since I had just finished painting some buildings for our game, and at 20% off), and a pile of books (because, honestly, you can never have too many books, right? :-) I only bought one book new (On Military Matters are the crack dealers of military history books, and I usually buy a lot from them, but I tried to be temperate). That one was With Zeal and With Bayonets Only, a book on infantry tactics during the Revolution which [livejournal.com profile] gr_c17 has been reading and really talking up. The others were all second-hand, several of them from this great guy named Kermit who always sells off part of his library in the flea market, He buys tons of books, reads them, and then resells a portion in order to buy more books. :-) He puts good dust-covers on them, keeps them in good condition, and sells theme ridiculous cheap. From him I got "Robert the Bruce: King of Scots", "Britannia: The Roman Conquest and Occupation of Britain", and "Storming Eagles: German Airborne forces in World War II" (I think I paid $15 for the lot). Form another flea market dealer I got the Osprey Campaign Series book on the battle of Vittoria ($10). And from Age of Glory I got four Napoleonic books: Sit Charles Oman's "Wellington's Army, 1809-1814", "Galloping at Everything: the British Cavalry in the Peninsular War and at Waterloo 1808-1815", "Journal of the Waterloo Campaign" (a classic memoir by a Royal Horse Artillery officer), and "Adventures in the Rifle Brigade" another British Napoleonic memoir.

ETA: I did actually buy a few figures. Specifically a pack of German WW1 officers and NCOs to keep my troops in line when we finally play Mud and Blood.

Coming up: games and catching up with friends.
