I'll add that in my not at all humble opinion, adding a suit jacket to a sleeveless top, capri pants, and sandals does not make one's garb "professional", just tasteless.

My "working gear" is black cropped trousers with a white shirt and black jacket - and that might be a sleeveless blouse in hot weather.

Sandals come in varying flavours, from "only on the beach" to "city smart".

Girl. I think if any guy came into work here in shorts, he would be told to go home and change. I'm one of the schluby people in the office in that I don't wear a suit, only chinos and a buttondown shirt. And I only get away with that because I (sort of) work in IT. Otherwise shirt and tie and dress trousers would be a minimum expectation.

And don't get me started on the number of women who, given that dress code, feel it is acceptable (and get away with) wearing rubber flip-flops to work.

Let me expand on "girl". In this case, upper-mid-level federal civil servant who engages in interagency conferences on a daily basis. Someone whose male counterparts are wearing two- or three-piece suits.

we in the UK are probably less formal in our dress codes than you these days - but as it happens, my black cropped trousers are *dress* cropped trousers - wide legged enough that at first glance they could be taken for a mid-calf length skirt, made from wool gaberdine with button trim.

tights/pantyhose are NOT required (though a little TLC to one's legs is desired - defuzzing and fake tan if one plans to go bare-legged)
