[livejournal.com profile] redactrice always used to make fun of my mock Welsh accent because she said it was just like my mock Indian accent. *I* could always tell the difference!

But I was watching 'Ashes to Ashes' the other night, and an Indian shopkeer describing some masked robbers says "they weren’t Welsh". How could he tell they weren't Welsh?", he's asked. Because "Welsh people sound like they’re from Calcutta," he says.

Yes! Vindication! :-)

I bet you (and he) are thinking of the North Welsh accent -- very dramatically melodic, with lots of tonal undulations (and, I agree, decidedly reminiscent of an Indian accent). A South Wales accent (and SW Welsh) is very different -- I'll have to see if I can't find some examples. But North Wales Welsh is the strongest (population-wise), and so the one people are liable to be exposed to the most. My teacher's from the South, and when he mocks North Wales Welsh he sounds like he's putting on an Indian accent too. It's kind of hilarious.

Also, I forget that LJ actually tries to implement the stupid stuff I come up with. The above was originally surrounded by < geekery > and < /geekery >.

Because I'm totally a geek. And Welsh is one of my favorite things to geek out about.
