Feb. 13th, 2009 04:02 pmEvery once in a while I make a list of all the things I do:
Other pursuits that have fallen by the wayside, or that I'd like to start but haven't found the time or opportunity for yet:
There's probably other stuff I've forgotten. But it illustrates why I always seem to have more things I'd like to do than time to do them in.
- work (regular job)
- chores (laundry, cleaning, cooking, dishes, cat maintenance, auto maintenance)
- fitness and enjoying nature (cycling, hiking, camping, birdwatching, kayaking, sailing)
- travel (local, US, Canada, UK, Europe, other cool places)
- soccer (watching DC United and the USMNT live, refereeing CCSL, watching NUFC and other foreign footy on TV, participating in the Screaming Eagles--this last has been dormant for a while)
- gaming (ASL--this is so involved and such a specialty game that it counts as its own hobby, really)
- gaming (DBA--so does this)
- gaming (other boardgames)
- gaming (other miniatures games)
- folk music (concerts and listening to recordings; some day "playing" may join this category, but no time soon)
- grad school (this is currently dormant, due to the program I'm currently in being full of fail--poor instructors and atrocious students)
- keeping up with current events (it's a full-time job, almost)
- books (buying and reading history, military and political affairs, biography, general fiction and genre fiction--given how much time I devote to it, it ought to get a category)
- television (likewise, given the time I spend keeping current with or catching up on shows or watching old ones I like, this deserves its own category)
- film (and one more ditto)
Other pursuits that have fallen by the wayside, or that I'd like to start but haven't found the time or opportunity for yet:
- work (freelance job--haven't done any of this lately)
- cooking (I can *make* food, but I don't have the knowledge or skill that someone like
shy_kat does) - writing (blogging is to writing what 'making dinner' is to cooking. :-)
- reenacting (18th century, ECW, ACW, WWI, SCA--this has been dormant for a pretty long time now, sadly)
- language learning (Gaidhlig, Spanish, French--which I used to know, German, Arabic/Farsi/Urdu/Pashto/Punjabi--for no reason but that I think the part of the world they come from is fascinating)
- participation in a religious community (UU is probably the only one where I'd feel comfortable at this point)
- dance (mostly folk social dancing, like Scottish or English country dancing or contra dancing)
- poll working (I used to be an election officer in Fairfax County; I've not done that for many years)
- woodworking (something that's always seemed like an appealing set of skills to pick up , but that I've never seemed to have time for)
- web design (I used to be all up on the latest stuff, but that was probably nearly a decade ago)
- drawing and painting (I never thought I was much good in school, but two of the piece I did got selected for permanent display--hopefully long gone since the renovations. But I would like to try it again someday.)
- other training/education (I've toyed with the idea of getting a teaching certificate, learning accountancy, learning IT network administration, or getting an MLS degree)
There's probably other stuff I've forgotten. But it illustrates why I always seem to have more things I'd like to do than time to do them in.
