Nice piece. Only two things tweaked my editorial antennae:
--The reference at the end of the first paragraph to a regiment "that consisted solely of one arm" will sound either silly or confusing to readers not familiar with the term "combat arms." Maybe that bit would be more accessible if it said "a regiment that consisted of only one of those types of troops."
--You might want to explain what going onto the Establishment means. The reference to the American Establishment made me think that the legion had somehow switched sides and been incorporated into the American (i.e., Continental) army.
A good piece of public service on your part. God bless everyone who has written Wiki entries about US missile defenses. I've been consulting them continually for my current editing assignment.
