an article from the Times on the latest cybernews--online cheating on your spouse!

an article on the affair from the Guardian

And a piece on how cyber-journos got the scoop.

Of course, none of this is really new, just the way technology is used to do the same old things humans have always done, just now over greater distances.

Sad seems the most appropriate word, on many levels...

The only thing that surprises me about this is that they think it's news. I do online gaming: I know couples who play in the same online game but whose characters there are (virtually) married to other people. I know of a case where the wife got rather annoyed with her (real life) husband's over-explicit descriptions of what he and a (virtual) blonde were (virtually) doing together, and (really) left him. It happens all the time. This is why when I'm roleplaying, my characters do not have relationships with other player characters unless I know I can trust the player not to confuse imagination with reality.

And radical politics. Don't forget that.

And killing each other. I firmly believe that all new technologies are initially used for a) the military and b) porn.

Why was the Times article the only one to keep on and about how much the divorced couple weighed and include the thought of them "waddling" to the pub or whatever - only fat losers play online games and make themselves look unlike their real lives? Its a fantasy for a reason, not much point in a virtual world if you can't play around, most of the time I don't end up as human in such things. You never hear about the people who hooked up online and are happy, of course, or the chance such games give for people with more obscure interests to spend time chatting to like-minded folk - oh, except when it involves furries, they're fair game for everyone.. :(
