According to a report issued Thursday by the Transportation Department's inspector general, "six air traffic controllers provided accounts of their communications with hijacked planes on Sept. 11, 2001, on a tape recording that was later destroyed by a Federal Aviation Administration manager," the Washington Post reports. "It is unclear what was on the tape, but its destruction did little to dispel the appearance that government officials withheld evidence," the report said.

Agreed. One of my favourite pastimes when my more "out there" friends and acquaintances" start telling me about the One WOrld Conspiracy or the New World Order is telling them stories from my work in the federal government. If the feds were are efficient, careful, coordinated, and effective as some sonspiracy theorists would have us believe, there would be no pollution, no crime, no illegal immigration, no lost mail, and the Shrub's tax cuts could have been paid for by all the tax money that is currently owed but not collected by the IRS.

Which is not to say that there aren't conspiracies and cover-ups; just that I'm not convinced that they can be both wide-ranging and longs-standing. At some point, someone is going to blow a whistle or simply cock up (look at Watergate, Cointelpro, Iran-Contra,a nd so on...)
