In a tremendous hurry today, and got up late because I was up until 1.30 getting financial details the lawyer needs fro the divorce. Among other things I learned just how badly I need to clean out the pile of papers on my desk. But even still, this morning it was rush, rush, get kit bag together for class tonight, grab empty bottle for pills I need to get for cat, make sure I have all the papers I need to xerox for the attorney, empty the trash and the cat box that I should have done Monday, clean up the hairball (third in less than a week--note to self, must give out more petromalt), futilely hunt for watch and sunglasses for the nth time, clear up upstairs dishes.
So, being in a hurry, I didn't have time for breakfast, and I grabbed the sushi I got the other evening at Trader Joes. Got to work, booted up the electronic second self, and ate breakfast. Mmmmmm, sushi. Pop some wasabi on these first two, sprinkle a little soy over everything and...
WAAUUGGH!
I like wasabi. I have a fairly high wasabi tolerance compared to most of the nonJapanese people I know. But great googly moogly I put too much on the first two rolls I ate! It's the same brand (Kinjirushi) that usually goes in supermarket sushi packets, but this must have been an exceptionally strong batch. I had to pause halfway through eating the first piece to allow the incredible burning sensation in the roof of my mouth to stop and to wipe the copious floods of tears from my eyes. Good heavens! I removed about half of what I had put ont he second piece and the SAME THING happened. Jizo bosatsu! Kami aid me!
But it was still yummy. :-)

Date: 2004-05-05 07:10 am (UTC)And thank you for that delightful entry - I'm sorry that you were "over-wasabi'd", but it made me crack up a bit.
Want to do a sushi night sometime?

Date: 2004-05-05 07:40 am (UTC)But we'd snobbily mix our own wasabi from powder. By snobbily, I mean we'd mix the powder with ice cold water, for that is how the food snobs recommend, and then let it steep with itself for a while, and oh my god was it lethal after that.
