One board I read had a thread on the Sean Taylor shooting. One poster responded, "I sincerely hope we catch the responsible party, as vengance and justice are far more satisfying than mourning and rememberance."
Apart from the typos, I find the essential nature of the sentiment expressed very... disturbing.

Date: 2007-11-28 05:35 pm (UTC)The poster was not, AFAIK, a relative or close friend of Mr Taylor. And I am pretty big on justice myself. It was the equation of vengeance with justice that I found 'upsettling' (as Neil Gaiman calls it), and the suggestion that violence is a better response to loss than remembrance. Just my inclinations.

Date: 2007-11-28 07:11 pm (UTC)On the other hand, had they said "justice and remberance", that would have been fine, since both are big important and positive words, in a way that "vengeance and mourning" are not. THe latter implies, to me at least, the bad old days of careless sudden death and lynching the perpetrator. Whereas the former is much more civilised, which I prefer.
