I'm thinking of taking a week's holiday in early September, and I am being hideously tempted by this trip.

Other options would be a self-planned trip around Moray and Aberdeenshire, Fife and Angus, or the Borders... or just going to as many of the events of this year's Blas as possible.

By far our favorite part of the trip was the west coast and adjacent islands, if going for cultural stuff there is more to see and do in the east and south, but for scenery the west part is where it's at, the Cairngorns were kind of disappointing after seeing Mull (they probably are quite a bit easier to hike through though).

Yeah, I've been up and down about half the western coast (Argyll, Lochaber, and Skye), and that's definitely where my heart is. I *do* want to see some of the rest of the country, though, and I figure I'll have plenty of chances to spend time out west when I have Neta to show all my favourite places to (she's starting school, so she can't come on this jaunt).

I'm reading your entries with delight, as I know some of the places you went and haven't yet been to others.

How were the midges? I've not experienced them yet. I've been wondering what effect the (seemingly, from weather reports) incessant rain has had--keeping them down or encouraging them?

They were only bad at two of the campsites, and at our lunch site on Iona - the rain was more or less incessant and we had many people tell us about how it was the wettest summer in some 20+ years - the places they were the worst were in somewhat sheltered campgrounds that didn't get much of a breeze. Somewhat ironically our sunniest part of the trip was Iona and Mull - we even got a bit sunburnt on Iona.

OOh, I'd never heard of the Blas. I'd go for the music if it was me! There are some great bands appearing, including the one closest to my heart, Kathryn Tickell.

Well, I am tempted. The feis is very close to my heart, as it was because of it that I ended up staying for a night on Raasay, which I loved, and also--totally by accident--making a terribly nice friend, magaidhbhan.

But a hiking holiday complete with gourmet cook also sounds appealing...

Damn Blas. So many good acts. You'd have going to Shooglenifty and DUncan Chisholm at least.

Parents are in Buchan at the moment at the oddly named Stricken.
