Nov. 14th, 2006 12:20 amReally, what is as fun and as good a way to take one's mind off one's troubles as to spend money?
I've been feeling blue most of the day and thinking that a nice binge might be good. Things began looking up towards the end of the day (especially when I started working really hard--go figure!) Then I came home, had something to eat, watched some telly with the grrls, and was about to go to bed when I realised I'd still never had my spending spree.
So I pulled out my spreadsheet for the year and looked to see what months I still didn't have any charitable giving marked down. I try to send at least 5% of my net income to charity, and with the raise and the special dividend that SAIC (finally!) paid on our IPO, I could certainly afford to catch up.
I wish my encyclopedaeic knowledge of trivia could bring up the advice that Isaac Jaffe gives Dan on 'Sports Night' when he's trying to decide who to give money to. I remember it being pithy but good.
In the end, I spent about a quarter of the dividend this evening. Now, *that* is what I call fun. :-) Among other things, I found a charity that the actor Josh Malina supports. Bet Tzedek. And I dug up the name of the fund at my college that preserves a lending library of textbooks for scholarship students; I was very grateful for it when I was there, and the 1914 Library seems a good thing to be contributing to right after Remembrance Day, so that goes on the list!

Date: 2006-11-14 04:15 pm (UTC)Though I need to call the credit card company; it seems my sending money to half a dozen different charities in a few hours may have gotten a hold placed on my card... *sigh*
