I've finally come to realise that there are a number of women who refer to their husband int he third person as DH, signifying 'darling husband'. Huh; since they're none of them people whose surnames I know, I just thought they were all named H-something and married to men named Daniel or David or Donald or Duncan or Derek or Devon...

You'll also see DD and DS if you hang out in some groups. These of course mean Dear Daughter and Dear Son respectively.

Yeah, I've run into that on Fodors boards and elsewhere. By process of elimination, I figured it stood for "darling hubby." I'm afraid I find it fairly cloying.

I've never seen men use a similar abbreviation, such as LW (little woman) or OBC (old ball and chain).

If by cloying you mean utterly annoying and somewhat pretentious, then I agree. I married a man - his name is Dave. If he had an LJ, I might use his login, but probably not.

I don't see why it's pretentious. Some people don't like their real names floating around he internet, so why not use the 'accepted' husband term? It's been around on forums/BBs forever now.

My husband has a non-LJ blog and has called it DH's Blog, so obviously he doesn't mind. (possibly because he prefers it to D.W., which I also call him, after Arthur the Aardvark's little sister...)

With a side of slightly creepy - yes.

Hmm, maybe I'll start using those for you!

"So the other day OBC was telling me to..."

I thought it was only God-Botherers that did this.

I used to get so confused by this--in my girlier moments I like to browse some of the wedding communities and I would see FH (future husband) quite often so I'd be like, "DH?" "Divorced Husband? Huh?"

I find it kind of cloying as well. Ant's name is pretty common (unlike mine) but if I'm not going to refer to him by name, "SO" or "partner" works just fine--as will plain ol' "husband" someday.

I inwardly gag slightly everytime I see it, but yes it's pretty common in some circles.

Aye, a lot of the bookcrossers do it. I've seen DH, DS & DD.

I get muddled because I have a lot of 'D's in my life and *I* use genuine initials when I'm writing about people. Argh! :)

Check out www.bookcrossing.com (that will explain better - and more concisely - than I can.)

What color is uninformed? A light peach? Sort of mauve? Or is it kind of greyish-blue?

I not bothered by people doing it, but I think it's too cutesy for me.

Ha!

I'd have to say DLIP (Darling Live-In Partner) or summat.... :)

Depending on the temperament of the board and its members, DH can also mean "Damn Husband" or "Dumb Husband".

Personally, I prefer some of the alternative versions people have come up with on my favorite web forum: SU (for Spousal Unit, they're a same-sex couple), the Joint Filer, and the Vulgar Fraction (a reference to a quote about referring to one's partner as one's "other half").
