Holy freaking shit. Not that this is new, of course -- I remember going into a Christian bookstore because the cover of a children's book caught my eye. Same argument. Same pile o' goat turds. >:-P

My question is: why are they bothering? I mean, their goofy attempt at proving their faith through science makes them look even more moronic than just saying, "god says it; I believe it; that settles it." I'm hoping it's because they see that science is winning over blind faith (I personally don't believe that science and spirituality are incompatible) and that they're desperate to hold on, that these are the (protracted) death throes of a particularly myopic belief system.

I try to imagine some way it which it's a gesture of compromise ("OK, you think science is important--look, we'll show you why even science says we're right!") but really I can't help but see it as a kind of triumphalism ("All your science are belong to us!") and a way of reassuring any of their brethern who are wavering in the face of reason. I mean, they've got to know that people who haven't drunk the kool-aid are going to see something like this and laugh; only someone who gives no real credence to science and who hasn't taken even a basic high-school course in biology is going to believe this crap.

And, as I meant to mention before, this is *exactly* what I expect from home schooling. I'm sure lots of angry home-schoolers who are not complete wingnuts will leap to its defence, but this is just the sort of nonsense that it is important to have public schools to weed OUT. If we have any substantial portion of our population who are exposed only to this sort of claptrap without the mediating factor of a nonreligious educational system and a diverse societal experience, then they will be unable to grow out of this sort of brainwashing later in life and become normal, fucntional members of society. IMO.
