go back a few generations and I'm sure you'd hear parents complaining about how kids no longer play with hoops, but instead want to sit around building model airplanes.
Well, and there's still a burgeoning model industry. It's just that there isn't (as far as I know) a British kit company. And to be done down because the *FRENCH* had one's molds...how sad!
And, as I said to B, there's still Games Workshop. Instead of building small, inexpensive, easily comprehensible kits of ships and planes that require a few hours' work, a modelling knife, and some plastic cement, kids can spend a fortune to build incredibly expensive, hugely fiddly models of Space Marine Land Raiders and Eldar Wave Serpents that require half a dozen tools, three kinds of fixative, and an engineering degree to fit together...
