Careless, clueless, or simply cursed, I don't care. One of my projects for the next week is to find a new hosting company.

Damn - I was hoping you had already moved and could tell me a great place to move my web sites... sigh...

I may end up building my own solution out of colocated racks at two different sites and doing DNS tricks to hide site failures. That is a LOT of work though and will cost so much more... (pout)

Be wary - a lot of the webhosting review sites are 100% commercialized scammers. Their rankings are mostly who paid who off with nothing to do with real user reviews... it's a shame.

The open source software I like to use to run websites (WordPress (http://wordpress.org/hosting/), TextPattern (http://textpattern.com/hosts), Drupal (http://drupal.org/forum/34), phpBB (http://www.phpbb.com/)) each has recommended hosting solutions.

I quick clance at each of them for common recommendations reveals that they all like DreamHost, BlueHost, AN Hosting, and LaughingSquid; and some of them like Site5, TextDrive, iPowerWeb, LunarPages, hostgator, StartLogic, and InMotion.

Yeah, I ran into a couple of sites and noticed that their reviews were *too* full of praise; almost no one they reviewed ever seemed to do anything wrong. :-) One of the advantages of having read a lot of marketing copy and corporate press releases is that oen can often detect when one has been posted somewhere with "review" pasted at the top. :-)
