I agree it's a good idea, but it makes me slightly uncomfortable as I think it kind of discourages people from thinking further about their environmental footprint. You know, "I've flown down to London ten times this year to go shopping, but it's all okay because someone is planting some trees on my behalf". Don't get me wrong, it's much better than nothing and I realise that some people genuinely don't have any choice about flying for their work or whatever, but surely it would be much better to encourage people to think harder about lessening their impact than to assuage their guilt for the damage they cause.
Which is very handy, because it made me think seriously about the possibility of joining a car club instead of buying a car, dpeending on what's available where I live.
i've seen one that's an annual subscription based on calculation of an average. can't find it now. maybe one of your friends knows. anyway, i have daily_granola on my f-list, for other useful hints.
