May. 23rd, 2006 07:58 amOK, so here's the schedule I came up with.
6.30: up, feed cats, stretch
7.00: cycle (an hour only because, unless I only want to ride around my neighborhood, I need travel time--it seems silly to drive somewhere to ride a bike, but the road out of my neighborhood is simply not safe to bike on--one lane each way, no shoulder, and ditches or worse on either side), especially not a novice and not during morning rush hour)
8.00: shower, breakfast
8.45: commute
9.30 to 6.30: work
6.30: commute
7.15: errands, go home, make dinner, feed cats, hobbies, telly
10.45: tea, book, bed
11.30 to 6.30: sleep
Since I only take half an hour for lunch, that gives me 8.5 hours to bill every day, so I can take off a bit early on Mondays (for FOW night) and Tuesdays (for my weekly with Peter and Bryan) and still come out at 40/week.If I have to do errands during the day, that just takes a bit of time out of the ~3 hours I have at home in the evening.
The problem is that it's hard to fit my (preposterously time-consuming) correspondence with friends and relatives into that schedule. I can easily spend an hour or two in the morning reading and writing mail and making journal entries (like this one). I can't push that off to the middle of the day--I do too much of that at work as it is.
Quandry.

Date: 2006-05-23 12:33 pm (UTC)We had "Bike to Work" Day just recently, and I didn't, but I did track how far I drive, which is about 12 miles. I think if I cycled I could find a more direct route. I take a couple of motorways because they're faster for driving, but (a) you *can't* bike on them (it's illegal) and (b) I think they may be faster but not shorter. I need to get more acclimated to riding before I try riding in traffic, and the bike trails in the area, while good, aren't close enough to get me to work. But with a little more experience (and a little more stamina--10-12 miles twice a day every day would be a little much for me just yet), that's a serious possibililty.
Correspondence: whilst you eat lunch or at weekends?
Well, there's no two ways around it; I have to cut back if I want to do the other things I do. I just have to figure out how to do that. The volume I do now I simply couldn't do in half an hour or at the end of the week. Think of trying to keep up with one's LJ list by just reading once a week! But I've LJ *and* a ton of lists *and* many friends. The friends have to come first, and I'm inclined to put LJ before the lists, so that means I simply have to drop some of them (and pare back my LJ Friends list, I think), since there's no way I can keep up with them by reading periodically.
It's the same with hobbies. I've three or four groups of friends I game with regularly, another two groups I'd like to participate in but can never fit it. I cycle, but I'd like to get out hiking more, and I'd love to take sailing lessons over the summer. I read a ton, and watch a few shows on telly, but I can't remember the last time I went to the movies (actually, I can: it was LW&W, with
*sigh* There's nothing for it but to stop working. It takes up far too much of my day. :-)
