I'm all too familiar with Mr. Phelps and his black-hearted cohorts. I'm from Kansas City originally but I didn't really encounter them until I was working on site in Topeka, Kansas for a couple of years. At least once a week we'd see them on some street corner, waving their neon-colored signs, spewing forth their hatred and fear. It made my stomach turn every time. The worst part was seeing the children out there with them. What horrible poison are they being raised on?
We saw Penn and Teller perform while we were there one night, and Penn, referring to the Phelps group picketting out front (who knows why), said that he abhorred their message but strongly believed in their right to say it. I know it has to be that way, but damn the urge to commit assault is so strong sometimes.
