several different things at once
Oct. 26th, 2005 12:36 amAll sorts of stuff, that includes games amd footy.
I'm looking at a car tomorrow; someone at work was left a Subaru Forester by their parents, and they're selling it for a very reasonable price. It's not new at all, and I'll be sure to get a mechanic I trust to look over it, but it sounds like a good chance to get a backup for Harper, my seven-year-old Geo Prizm. I'd been looking at Foresters (along with Mini Coopers and maybe Rav-4s) as an option.
I taped "Commander in Chief", and it's not as bad as I thought it might be. It's no West Wing, but it's a good bit better than E-Ring; I'll keep watching it for a while.
Spaeking of television, I'd really misssed Jon Stewart. I stopped taping every show, but I started again, and his wit is just so to my taste. And he can get people like Bill Kristol and O'Reilly to come on and, well, be as entertaining as a conservative trying to defend a sinking administration can be.
Speaking of shows I simply adore, I just love "As Time Goes By". The people in it seem real to me; the world they inhabit seems plausible. They're my comfort TV. If real life (in England, or anywhere else for that matter) isn't like that at all, please no one feel they need to tell me. :-) I want to be Lionel, and find someone like Jean, and settle down and do our thing until it's time to stop. Maybe be Tom and Diana from "Waiting for God" occasionaly, but I don't really feel a need to descend into fantasy or violent resistance. Maybe I will when I'm 70.
I'm sorry, but I'm really glad that the cold, rainy, blowy weather is here. My sympathies to all the people who really like hot and humid and sunny, but this is my time. This is the good stuff as far as weather goes. :-)
I'm hosting another English Civil War miniatures game on the 12th of November; if you;re interested in participating, let me know.
I'm also planning on having another games day; it's been a while. Would people be available the first weekend in November, either the 5th or 6th?
While I'm talking about games, DC United has its second leg against the Chicago Fire this Sunday at 4.30. I have an extra ticket; anyone care to join me? The Screaming Eagles tailgate this week is going to be chili from Hard Time Cafe (meat and vegetarian). Come on--you now you want to! ;-)

Date: 2005-10-26 06:15 am (UTC)I like Subarus and Jon Stewart too, but I understand the comfort-TV thing, particularly with that show.
Glad someone gets something out of cold, blowy, rainy weather. :-)

Date: 2005-10-26 07:51 am (UTC)As time goes by is quite a gentle comedy, but at least it is quite realistic! I used to love Waiting for God, so funny and all filmed quite locally for me

We saw her live in <All's Weel That Ends Well in London a couple of years ago. She commands the stage.

Date: 2005-10-27 01:51 am (UTC)Yes, I bought the tickets for us as an anniversary present a couple of years ago. And we definitely want to get to Stratford next year to see her on stage. (Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan will also be performing in Stratford next year. Tickets are on sale already for Stewart in Tempest and Antony and Cleopatra. McKellan is playing Lear.

Date: 2005-10-26 12:14 pm (UTC)Also, I'm sure it's something primordial. :-) A good portion of my ancestors lived for ages in Friesland on the edge of the North Sea, and then in upstate New York: I'm just conditioned to like grey and rainy :-)

As an aside - nothing is better than Ering!

I fear that my lack of appreciation for it may be because I'm taking it too seriously. I've worked in the Pentagon, and I've worked around military folks (though not SOF) for a long time, and they're just not like the people in that show. I was also a bit put off by the religious content of the ep I watched and the "we're too special to play by the rules" attitude of all the characters (though that *is* a very SOF attidue :-).

Date: 2005-10-26 01:16 pm (UTC)Oh, I only watch E-Ring for Benjamin Bratt, other than that, I'm pretty ignorant on how the Pentagon works, probably because I've never worked there.
