My friend [livejournal.com profile] vatoengland asked what I was reading right now about the Middle East (I replied with a rather long list of things I have read or mean to read).

But I have a lot of intelligent friends, many of whom are engaged with US foreign policy; what are you reading or have you read recently having to do with the Middle East and the US struggle (into which we've dragged various other countries) with Islamic terrorists?

I've been meaning to reaf The Future of Freedom (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0393324877/qid=1128085149/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-2702796-4104625?v=glance&s=books&n=507846) by Fareed Zakaria. Mostly because I have a huge, giddy crush on the guy.
Like so many things, however, I haven't gotten to it yet.
And I still have to finish The Eyre Affair (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0142001805/qid=1128085298/sr=8-2/ref=pd_bbs_2/103-6949752-5443860?v=glance&s=books&n=507846) by Jasper Fforde. Not US foreign policy, but good stuff! :)

I still need to start The Eyre Affair. I haven't read anything on the middle east, although the book you (winterbadger) were reading on Sunday looked interesting.

Wait - Arabic flash cards, do they count?

I've been told that Anthony Shadid's Night Draws Near is superb, but haven't read it yet.
