Google Earth is unhealthily addictive.

So far I've located my house, my old house, the house I grew up, the lake Chris and I went on our vacation in Colorado, RAND, CBO, the Game Parlor (Chantilly location)... I wanted to do the Governonr's Palace in Williamsburg, but the resolution there sucks.

Oh, and I traced the route of the boat ride I too across the Sound of Sleat, the walk I took from Elgol toward Glamaig, and the paddle I had off Raasay. If you want a good demo of the 3-d virtues of the tool, the Cuillins (or "Coolins" as they are labelled for some reason) are a good one.

Wow. Just ....wow.

For me the principal time waster, after looking at all the places I've worked, lived, or habitually vacationed, was examining military installations with visible aircraft or ships. Fascinating the things you can see--very nice imagery of Iraq and Afghanistan, but also good coverage of some oddball locations, like Tripoli, where you can ponder the sight of the Libyan submarine fleet moored unmovingly and MiG-25s scattered among the trees (not sure if it's to make them hard to see or just because everyone who works in a desert likes to park in the shade if they can).

Most impressive of these sites: the H2 airfield in western Iraq, still extensively perforated--quite literally--by hundreds of guided bombs from the 1991 Gulf War.
