I forget if either of them have mentioned it in their LJs, but
redactrice and
shy_kat are fostering a mom cata nd four kittens right now, ahving been approved by the Feline Foundation of Greater Washington as cat fostering people.
The current batch are tremendously cute: Penelope, a fairly young cat mom, long-haired grey with white tuxedo, one offspring marked as she is, two all-grey, and one all-black. They seem to pick up one new experience a day, at least. The first day they were here it was climbing the couch in C&M's library. The next day it was chasing toys. The next day it was stalking; several of them are now adept at the "drop to your belly, wait for the prey to settle, then wiggle your butt and pounce" technique. They are totally adorable! The kittens are about 5-6 weeks old; they become adoptable after, I think, eight weeks. Nora came over on Sunday, and we played with them, then played around them (we had two games of cards, which the kittens occasionally walked over, but mostly ignored). She was also very enchanted but discovered (to her relief) that she didn't feel instantly drawn to add another cat to her menagerie. And I agreed; they're cute and fun, but I didn't feel drawn to give them all a permanent home. Considering that if we end up living together at some point in the future we'll have five cats already between us, that's probably not a bad thing.

Date: 2005-04-13 01:40 pm (UTC)We're lucky in that all of the kittens (and mom) have good litter habits. The only bother is that I bought a smallish litter box for them, to make sure the kittens could get in and out easily, and I find I'm having to scoop out the box twice a day. Given that I only have to clean our big guys' boxes every three days or so, that pace is a bit much for me. Tonight I'm going to buy them a second box.
I know driving them around to the weekly adoption fairs once they get old enough might be a drag, but there are other volunteers to help do that. It really is a well run organization.
This is just a ton of fun! All the thrill of kittens without having to make a 15- to 20-year commitment.
