Scotland Itinerary

Mostly as a record-keeping device for myself, but also so as to share with others:

May 21: Fly from DC to London, then on to Glasgow (tickets booked by NJB)

May 22: Arrive Glasgow, limited sightseeing, spend the night at the Millenium Hotel (booked by JWSS)

May 23: More sightseeing in Glasgow, pick up rental car, drive to Oban, spend the night at Barcaldine House Hotel (booked by JWSS)

May 24: Sightseeing around Argyllshire, second night in Oban

May 25: Drive north, sightseeing around west central Highlands, spend night at Stronlossit Inn (booked by JWSS)

May 26: Drive to Skye, sightseeing along Road to the Isles, southern Skye, night in the Royal Hotel, Portree (booked by JWSS)

May 27: Sightseeing in and around Skye, including sea cruise to see (hopefully) otters and seals. Second night in Portree. (No, I will not be going to the Serpentarium.)

May 28: Drive south, sightsee around Loch Lomond, Dumbarton. Spend the night at Knockderry House, in Helensburgh.

May 29: Drive to Glasgow, return car, fly back to DC. :-(

This may be an overly ambitious schedule, but we'll see... The worst that can happen is we have to go back another time and catch stuff we missed. :-) I think I may already have identified a (perhaps solo, given my sweetie's feeling about tippy boats) future holiday idea.

confirm remaining hotel bookings
make sure I know where my passport is
book rental car
plan and execute packing
help Nora buy camera
make notes on what we want to try to see where
compile list of addresses for sending postcards :-)

Ooooh, even I'm jealous. That looks like so much fun!!! I'm sad about my lack of vacation time this year.

Well, I don't *ever* get much; this should just about nuke me for the year :-) (I'll have a day or two saved up again by the winter holdays.) But then you've jsut started a new job and moved across country; sadly, I think that was your "vacation". Make sure I have your mom's address, though. I should send a her a postcard from Skye :-) And I need yours too!

I'm looking forward to your trip reports. Got tickets for early August, but I'll probably be staying in Glasgow the whole time (unless I get extra money to burn before then) and doing day trips before and maybe after the convention.

There are a number of good things to do around Glasgow, especially if you like (a) art museums, (b) architecture, (c) folk music. There's also reputedly good clubbing and fantastic shopping, but neither of those are recreations I'm into :-).

The Insight Guide for Glasgow is good, and there's a fair section on Glasgow in the Lonely Planet Guide, though it only forms a small part of the book. I've also used Scotland for Dummies and the Fodor's Guide to Scotland and found them useful. Fodor's had the most useful maps of Glasgow among this group, and Lonely Planet books, like the Rough Guides, aim more toward the hostel-and-B&B crowd than the general audience.
