Hmm, there are definitely some there I need to see. I'm really surprised to see "Leon," aka "The Professional," on there. It was quite good for an assassin movie (Jean Reno, Natalie Portman, and Gary Oldman were all good in it), but it was no (original) "Day of the Jackal."

"Shawshank Redemption" was only okay at best. "Usual Suspects" was, when I tried to watch it, so dull that I changed the channel. And "Fight Club"? Give me a break. Makes me wonder who did the rankings. Overall, though, lots of good movies listed. Realizing how many I haven't seen is a little sad, but there's only so much time for watching.

If it did, indeed come off IMDB (their current top 100 is very similar to this), the voters are just whoever turns up at their website and bothers to register with them. And they seem to use a straight mean score ranking, as there are some that have a huge n (over 100,000 votes) and others with as few as 5,000 votes.

Of the ones I haven't seen, mostly the ones I'd like to see are the older classics (e.g., Notorious, Strangers on a Train) though a few of the newer ones I want to watch one of these days too (Reservoir Dogs and, yes, Leon).

Just FWIW, here's the current listing of top 100 at IMDB; actually, the top 250, split into 1-100 and 101-250. They also explain their ranking system; it *is* weighted, just in a complicated way.

BTW, I too liked the original Day of the Jackal. Forsyth has had (IMO) better luck than many authors in having the screen treatments of his books turn out both good and quite like the book. Odessa File and DotJ came out quite well; I notice he's credited as lead writer on both of them, which may account for it. OTOH, he lead wrote Dogs of War and executive produced Fourth Protocol, and those were both (IMO) aggressively mediocre.

Fight Club: This is, for some reason, a cult movie. Never seen it. Don't know I ever will. But those who like it love it, for whatever reason.
