May. 1st, 2012 07:59 pmThe new show I was enthusing about is called Accused. It comes from the fertile miond of Jimmy McGovern, who also came up with the awesome (IMO) The Street which has a similar story-telling process, Gunpowder, Treason & Plot, which I haven't seen but would like to, and several other acclaimed series. One was apparently an early(ish) vehicle for John Simm, whom I really liked in State of Play and Life on Mars, and who has also done lots of other terrific stuff I need to catch up on.
But now, another ep of Accused is waiting for me. And a Newcastle Brown, thanks to
john_arundel. I was bummed to miss my date this evening (late work-based cancellation), but this is proving to be a decent second-best.
ETA: I just need to add, after watching the episode "Helen's Story", that I think this is one of the best episodic dramas I've seen in a long time. It's sad and it's harsh and it's bitter, and it's very, very real. I feel as if I were watching a series of short stories by one of the best writers brought to life and acted incredibly. Peter Capaldi has really grown as an actor, from the goofy-looking guy who only got offbeat roles to someone with strength and care and attention to detail and amazing depth of feeling. But Juliet Stephenson outshines him in this piece. I have seen her over and over in dozens of different films and programmes, and she is simply one of the best actresses I know. Truly astounding acting, writing, and production.
