I'm thankful for eVite.

OK, I told you it was silly. :-) But I like being able to send an electronic invitation to people, configured with goofy images and comic replies, be able to track who's seen it and who's coming, and have it directly link them to my address and phone # so I don't have to compose directions for everyone.

31. Roma by Steven Saylor. My mother was very fond of Edward Rutherford's historical novels, which are each of them set in a place and track the lives of people there over centuries. I tried one and didn't care for it at all; he didn't strike me as a very good writer.

In Roma, Steven Saylor gives the city of Rome the same treatment, in my opinion to better effect. I like his Roma Sub Rosa novels, detective stories set in the late Republic, very much. This isn't as good (I think I just don't think the whole place-over-time novel idea works very well), but parts of it are engaging, and he does a good job of tracing some of the important events in Roman history and working them into the narrative (it really took me back to my undergrad class in Roman studies). I'd give it a solid three stars out of five.

I need to polish off some of my low-hanging fruit (the half-dozen or so books I've half-read) if I'm going to get close to 50 at this rate...

My thankfulness today is for my US Congressional Representative, Donna Edwards, who is one of four urging incoming House conservatives who oppose government-run healthcare plans to forgo their own government-run Congressional healthcare plan. Will they? or is it a case of "Do as I say, not as I do?"

ugh!

That was a perfectly nice dinner. Not fancy, but it was simple and tasted good.

Or it would have, but for this horrid taste that's been in my mouth since Sunday. Something about the stew I made then has left my mouth with a coating or underlying film or something that makes everything I eat bitter, really, really bitter.

I've tried drinking milk, brushing my teeth repeatedly, gargling with Listerine, gargling with salt water, chewing powerful gum...nothing makes it go away.

:-(
