and religion
Aug. 19th, 2006 07:14 pmThere are those who think that footy is my religion, and they may be right.
But I was headed home to day, and the usual primordial soup of extensive reading was forming in my brain and being stirred by the ladle of not nearly critical enough thinking. And ideas about Christianity, the Vanished Imam of 12er Shi'ism, and the traditional search for the resurrected lamas* of Tibetan produced this thought:
How different (and, to my mind, better) Christianity would have been if, instead of Christ being resurrected once (during the lifetime of the Apostles) and once more (at some indeteminate time in the future when the world ends), Christ were resurrected, *unbeknownst*, in each generation. Wouldn't that be cool? Wouldn't that be an incentive for all Christians to treat each other, to treat all humans, gently and with loving kindness? Because no one would ever know if the beggar at the door, the child in the street, the old person lost and confused in the busy city center, might be the Christ.
Yes, there are all sorts on instructions in scripture to treat each other as one would treat Chrsit, and to look after little children, and so on. But, come on. What are the vast majority of Christians motivated by? The life and example of Christ. And they *know* that, unless the final day of judgement has arrived, the Boss's Son isn't back, wandering around disguised as a bag lady. But what if *any* person one met, what if *every* person one encountered, could be the risen Christ? It would be the ultimate Candid Camera, the best and most lasting version of punk'd.
These are the things I think about coming back from footy matches.
That and how much I would like to door the cyclist who rides through 2-3 red lights everyone else stops for.
*One-L lamas, of course. Not to be confused with two-L llamas or three-L lllamas!
