Jun. 1st, 2006 10:31 pmWednesday night's soccer match went well, DC playing a stonking game against the resurgent Columbus Crew and shattering them 5-1. Jaime Moreno got his century (100th career league goal), only the second player in MLS to do do. There's a nice piece here by Marc Connolly that makes a good case for Jaime being MLS's greatest player ever.
Tonight was a quiet night; I worked until 6.30, then came home and had a short bike ride before a thunderstorm broke (well, a bit; it was a pretty quiet storm here). I grilled a salmon steak and ate some more of the potato and turnip thing I made the other night (I chucked the last of it--it had gotten a bit boring), watched some Smallville and a Daily Show rerun, and chatted with Da Grrlz.
My friend Andy sent me a story about people touring around and staying at some of the castles that have been turned into hotels (posh countries houses for the most part, just called castles in flights of Victorian or Edwardian fancy). One of the ones mentioned is Carbisdale Castle, which was built in the twentieth century and has been turned over to teh Scottish Youth Hostel Association, so all sorts of people can stay there and enjoy this rather fantastic place.
Which made me think of the day or two I spent on Raasay at Raasay House, once the seat of the MacLeods of Raasay (who played host to Dr. Johnson the dictionary man) and is now the Raasay Outdoor Centre. Really, it's a wonderful place, and if you're in the UK and looking for a pleasant place to spent a holiday surrounded by the beauties of nature, with lots of cool activities (like climbing, kayaking/canoeing, sailing, or just hiking and seeing wonderful birds and sealife), I would strongly recommend you give them a try. It's a wonderfully bohemian place, with charming staff and a very relaxed atmosphere.
Ah, Scotland... I do love it so!
