I played my second full Flames of War game today, again against the charming (if rascally) and goodsportsmanly Frank Popecki of the Iron Fist League. My Indians (Coy. A, 1/1st Punjab Regiment, 141 Indian Brigade, 4th Indian Division, 1940) held out for a long time against a German panzergrenadier company, but he had overrun my Royal Artillery battery early on, so it was hard to damage his heavier targets, and he out machinegunned me seriously. Frank's dice are always atrocious, and mine are usually better than average when I play him, so he took a long time to grind me down. :-) 1st Platoon even took out a platoon of German assault guns with their sticky bombs (a horrible weapon to use, from what I've read), but int he end he simply pounded me into the ground. Next time I will take a few more chances and use the fearlessness of my brave jawans to better advantage.

Off for a little bike riding before A. comes over to go to the Screaming Eagles tailgate and the DC-Houston match with me.

Beautiful day! This is what a summer day should be like, in my opinion.

Rupert and I had a lovely ride in the park along the Accotink Trail, from Prosperity to Rt 50, then back and down to Woodburn and back to Prosperity and then home in time to shower and meet A.(hopefully) at 5. Nearly 4.5 miles, and a bit on Rt 50 (service road!) just to have a bit of strenuous uphill and to be able to say I'd been on the road ;-) in just about half an hour. And, yes, my average speed is up a bit too.

I realise this is all very small beans to serious cyclists, but it's fun for me. I can really understand how the bicycle became the sportscar of late 19th century Europe, as Barbara Tuchman describes in The Proud Tower. It's so freeing and pleasant to zoom along quiet little lanes in the shade of green trees with birds singing all around.

And I finally set the clock on Rupert's computer, so it isn't four hours off :-)

OK, time to shower...

too funny!

A. and I went to the SE tailgate, where we saw [livejournal.com profile] redactrice, and then in to the game, which was a great deal of fun. United look as if they are getting their act together, finally (yes, I'm impatient, it's only the third game of the season, but thy had all the preseason to work the kinks out). Adu is playing better with others, Christian looks good, Boswell is back in the center of defense, Jaime was workin' it, Ben was demonic, Gros was his usually excellent self (which always means he gets over looked, because he's so consistently good :-), and Troy Perkins was playing his GLOVES OFF, he was so hot. He really wants to keep the starting spot.

Very nice match, happy with the result. Night all, more later.
