A cook in north-east China who was sacked 12 times for refusing to cook rare wild animals has been recognised for his contribution to conservation.
US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is facing mounting pressure, as a new set of photographs showing Iraqi prisoner abuse is published.
In a separate development, one of the closest aides of US Secretary of State Colin Powell has made an outspoken attack on other members of the Bush administration.
Larry Wilkerson said Mr Powell had spent much of his time doing damage control around the world for the actions of his colleagues, and attacked those he said were making "cavalier decisions" about sending American men and women out to die.
In addition, based on the munitions and contraband uncovered by Marines during their initial foray into the city, U.S. military officials believe a large number of roadside bombs and car bombs detonated elsewhere in Iraq may have been manufactured in Fallujah.
A military intelligence officer noted this week that there have been no large car bombings in Baghdad since the Marines surrounded Fallujah in early April. "Fallujah is a place that is rife with terrorist leaders and bomb-makers who are responsible for attacks not just in Fallujah but across Iraq," the officer said.
