the same guy's photos of where the RPG ripped through the driver's seat are frightening, but this one looks so calm until you realize all those little dots are landmines; dozens and dozens and dozens of landmines...

did you catch the coverage yesterday of the massive protest in new york city?

I heard a bit about it on the radio, and I read several LJ entries from someone who was in one of the marches. It sounds like it all went very well; the LJ poster in particular remarked on the good relations (for the most part) between the police and the protestors.

Maybe it's because I just watched a DS9 episode last night about minefields. Maybe it's just because there are so darn many of them, all just sitting quietly there. Maybe because it's a reminder (given that the photograph was taken just recently, not during the "war") that we're not fighting a group of ragtag insurgents but, inter alia, the cadres of the Mukhabarat and the Special Republican Guard, who still have access to stockpiles of government-quality arms and ammunition.

Maybe because all that reminds me, in one simple picture, that this is not a "bloody peace" that's going on--we're still fighting the WAR. We got into it at teh wrong time and in the wrong way, but we have to decide if we're going to pull out or try to finish the job of setting up a self-governing Iraq. And while we're deciding, the war goes on.
