U-23 team drops 4-0 decision
Associated Press
GUADALAJARA, Mexico -- The roster of U.S. athletes headed to the Summer Olympics is growing steadily smaller.

A swarming Mexican offense knocked the U.S. team out Tuesday night with a 4-0 victory that ended a string of five appearances for the Americans in the games.

Rarely have I seen a national squad, junior or not, play such a pathetic game. I know we were missing defensive starters, but the players on the field seemed incapable of thinking, adapting, or actually even playing very well. The US players, that is. The Mexican players were quite impressive. The first three goals they scored were works of beauty, particularly the ?third? a totally impromptu volley off an unexpected deflection. The last wasn't bad, it just wasn't terribly impressive; it was practically a gift.

Countess did almost as well in goal as could have been expected. Convey did what seemed to be an adequate job, but most of the other US players I knew were awful. DaMarcus Beasley looked like he had lead weights attached to his feet. Landon Donovan seemed invisible most of the game. Myernick's decision to only switch out one player at halftime, when his backline was clearly totally unable to meet the challenge and his strikers had been totally buffaloed, was mysterious at best.

Sick, sick, wrong, and bad. That team did not deserve to go to the Olympics. And guess what? They're not!
