I do love the 1970s-1980s television programme that was made from James Herriot's books about being a Yorkshire vet in the 1930s.

It features his wonderful story-telling (most of the scripts are taken word for word straight from the books), and so it embodies Mr Herriot's  kindness and generosity and humility and his wonderful openness to new experience.

And it's got a wonderful cast--Robert Hardy and Peter Davison, of course, as the Farnon brothers; Christopher Timothy in the central role. The estimable Mary Hignett as Mrs Hall, who keeps everything running. And the beautiful Carol Drinkwater as James's sweetheart and (eventually) wife. In her 30s when the show was made, Drinkwater was remarkably beautiful in a very classic English way. And you know what? She's still beautiful!

I enjoyed both the books and the programmes, I remember an interview with Christopher Timothy where he said he had to fall over in some mud and get it in his mouth. At the start they covered the mud with chocolate, but after a few takes this was long gone leaving just the mud - yuck!

It's a great show! And it's really adorable...and yes, I think I must be a total wimp, but there are parts that I start crying about. I read the books as a kid, and while it stopped me from wanting to be a vet, I really enjoyed them, and they stuck with me.

Hey, it's a good show if it gives you a sense of the real job, and you can make your decisions from there. :-)

I wouldn't have minded the going out in the dark and the cold or the sticking your arm in a cow parts nearly as much as all the work they had to do betweentimes keeping up with journal articles in parasitology and vaccines.
