Ignore unless you're really interested in such things.

So, having come to a 90% decision (yes, I never really make up my mind about anything :--(  I got another jolt of a couple of percent on hearing a rumour of details still being worked on.

Not content with axeing Tier 1 PSWV and replacing it with a modified Tier 2 Work Permit, the govenment are considering making that a special Tier 2 track that has no settlement option.

Under Tier 1 (the preferred route for work migration, now only open to rich people and geniuses), you get to count all your time in the UK toward eventual settlement (whether indefinite leave to remain--like a US Green Card) or citizenship.

Under Tier 4 (student visas) you cannot count any time for settlement; the clock to determine your eligibility for residency doesn't start until you switch to a different track.

Under Tier 2, you get to count all your time. But you have to get someone to sponsor you, an employer; if you lose your job or want to switch jobs, your new employer has to sponsor you all over again or you lose your permit to stay and work.

Now the government are talking about carving out an exception in Tier 2 where you still lose your right to stay and work if oyu lose your job, but you don't get to count your time towards settlement,

Motherfuckers. So much for "We don't want students to abuse our system, but we do still want the best and brightest to stay and contribute to our society," Well, no, you don't, really. You want to screw as much money and contribution out of people as you can, then toss aside them like an empty beer can or a used condom.

And they haven't even decided this for sure. Which on the one hand is good (maybe they won't take this extra step, and I'll have a few percentage points of doubt to worry over until I need to make a final decision on my university offer), but on the other... Sweet Judas Priest! This is the literal definition of "making it up as you go along". And this is national government policy that affects tens of thousands of people. What a bunch of fucking amateurs!

I know. It's just inane.

And my bf is trapped in this - he's on PSW but no one's willing to hire him with such a reasonably short time left on his visa, and Jesus Christ we are not getting married just to keep him in the country. GAAH.

Well, he has a short-term job. It could be extended. But the chances of his tiny company being able and willing to sponsor him for a Tier 2 - if that's even possible - is slim.

and on the other side of this - I get really annoyed at the idea of me having to apply for (and pay for) the "it's not a visa, honest, gov" visa to visit the US for a holiday when the US and UK are supposedly part of the "visa waiver" agreement.

can we just sack both our governments?

I'm just attempting to catch up on LJ right now (it's been a bit hectic at work) and just . . . I'm sorry. (And trust me, a lot of people in HE over here aren't thrilled with these changes, either.)
