Feb. 4th, 2011 11:09 amOK, this has me baffled.
What do you suppose is meant in an professional organization's invitation by
"Dress: Casually Elegant / Casual Kilts"
I'm slightly flummoxed.

Date: 2011-02-04 04:39 pm (UTC)I guess "casual elegant" means "pretend to be casual--no jacket/tie--but dress really expensively (posh trousers, designer shirt, etc.)" *sigh*

Date: 2011-02-04 04:48 pm (UTC)Your def. of casual elegant sounds likely. DH's company had a holiday party where the dress was "holiday casual" and we interpreted that as sorta similar - nice pants/shirt but no tie, and dresses or nice skirts/tops for the ladies.
I hate all these bizarre dress code phrases!!

Date: 2011-02-04 10:43 pm (UTC)I'm basically going for the schmoozing -- I don't have any connection to Glasgow Uni at all, but the newly-hired Scottish Gaelic prof up here did his PhD there, so he's taking me along for the craic. And the networking (but mostly the craic). I figure it can't hurt to have friends there, even though the likelihood that I'm going to do anything there is pretty much nil at this point.

Date: 2011-02-07 07:47 pm (UTC)I just want to point out that popular opinion and lobbying institutions can influence national policy - down the road. Talking to people is one way that people learn of problems. One person telling another that a potential student said he or she was not going to attend, because of the policy... It's not proof, obviously, but it could be the "snowball that starts the avalanche" that could lead to a study and even policy change, in the future.
