OK, this has me baffled.

What do you suppose is meant in an professional organization's invitation by

"Dress:  Casually Elegant / Casual Kilts"

I'm slightly flummoxed.

Hah! Awesome. And I have no idea. Maybe a Casual Kilt is like a Utilikilt?

Ahhh! See, you're not at all confused, then! ;)

Your def. of casual elegant sounds likely. DH's company had a holiday party where the dress was "holiday casual" and we interpreted that as sorta similar - nice pants/shirt but no tie, and dresses or nice skirts/tops for the ladies.

I hate all these bizarre dress code phrases!!

I'm going to an event next Thursday with precisely that dress code. I'm kind of at a loss. I think you're right, that kilts are A-OK, but they don't want you to wear a Prince Charlie -- but for "casually elegant" (meaning what I'm going to wear)? No clue.

Man, you're never going to get a chance to use your top hat and sliver-tipped cane... bummer.

That's the one! ;) I was thinking that there surely couldn't be two invitations worded in just that way (unless Glasgow has more than one Burns reception!)

:( I'm so sorry everything's gone to crap over there. At least they didn't change it on you when your plans were irreversibly in motion? Such an idiotic waste.

I'm basically going for the schmoozing -- I don't have any connection to Glasgow Uni at all, but the newly-hired Scottish Gaelic prof up here did his PhD there, so he's taking me along for the craic. And the networking (but mostly the craic). I figure it can't hurt to have friends there, even though the likelihood that I'm going to do anything there is pretty much nil at this point.

Why not go? You have a chance to discuss current immigration politics - which might help influence future ones...

I am not saying you should go (your choice, I know).

I just want to point out that popular opinion and lobbying institutions can influence national policy - down the road. Talking to people is one way that people learn of problems. One person telling another that a potential student said he or she was not going to attend, because of the policy... It's not proof, obviously, but it could be the "snowball that starts the avalanche" that could lead to a study and even policy change, in the future.
