recent trip to the doctor
Jun. 17th, 2004 05:37 pmMeant to post this before. One of the issues that came up in my last trip to the doctor was my recurring problems with haemmorhoids and gastroespohageal reflux. The doc (a very nice woman of Italian and Ethiopian extraction) referred my to a gastro practice across the hall for a sigmoidoscopy, which I had last week.
What this entails, basically, is sticking a flexible tube up your bum that carries a camera, a tiny hose, and a few other attachements as needed. They were very brisk and businesslike about it, and it wasn't too painful, just a few bits of discomfort. It is profoundly weird to be lying on your side watching a TV display of the interior of your colon, however. They spotted a bit of pitting from diverticulitis and two polyps (one of which I was aware of, given its position just inside the rectum) which they're going to remove. They sent me away with some phots they'd snapped :-) and a promise to send me information on scheduling a return for a full colonoscopy (they only explored on third of the large intestine, and if they're going to be taking stuff out they want to look at teh rest as well). The doctor (a polite young Korean chap) assured me that the polyps did not appear to be cancerous (hooray!) and the medical technician (honestly, think Jack Lalane with a shaved head) assured me that I had "just a great colon! very healthy looking!" and congratualted me on how well I had handled the procedure. THey knock you most of the way out for the return trip, however. I hope at least I get more pictures. :-)
