Just back from the Howlett-Kuhnell wedding. Lots of thoughts for another post, one about my various interior dialogues. (I mean, how ripe for a three-act play is a wedding where one of one's ex-wives is getting married to another woman, one's other ex-wife is attending with one of one's best friends, and another serious ex is in attendance with her husband whom you've never met before? and then all the former in-laws... Alan Ayckbourn (or Henrik Ibsen) would have a field day, let alone Oscar Wilde.)
But for me, the most emotional part was just what it ought to be--two of my best friends standing up in front of a lot of people affirming how much they love each other and pledging to stick with each other for thick and thin, from now to the end, amen. Really, really beautiful.
I've known Chris for over 25 years, and Melissa for over 5. I can't think of any relationship I know, especially one I've seen at close hand for many years, that boasts two people who love each other more and who are more dedicated to and skilled at the hard but happy work of building and maintaining a life together. No pairing is perfect or without its strains--we are all no more than human--but theirs is certainly a marriage of two minds...and two hearts.
Mazel tov, my dears!
