Sometimes I get desperate and throw things together in order not to waste veg that I got when I thought I'd be cooking more often during the week than I end up doing.

Tonight was one of those nights. About a third of a white onion, sauteed in olive oil. Added a pound of stew beef cut very fine (local beef from Whole Foods). Browned the beef, then added (gradually) a sliced summer squash, a sliced zucchini, about a third of a chopped red pepper, and about a half a bunch of asparagus. (The harry grass was very wilted and thin, so I chopped off just the bits that were still green and tender.) Simmered the whole thing about half an hour. I considered making some rice to put it on, but I'm not really looking to stretch it or fill up, so I'm just eating it on its own. I opened a bottle of saison that I got a while back, and a glass of that and a plate of the... meleange...is making a very tasty meal. Some herbs would probably have made it even better, but with freshly ground black pepper and salt, it tastes good. I figure it's about 500-600 calories and 40g of fat, and it makes 2-3 portions, more if you put it over rice.

I'd expect the Naschmarkt and the Brunnenmarkt to have tons of produce. ?? Or are you only eating in restaurants? It's true that Germanic restaurant s use minimal vegetables. There should be some Italian and other ethnic places around though...
