Didn't want to watch the match until I had finished putting together/placing all the bits and pieces. Not a lovely game, but a thrilling game and one with lots of drama. I don't think the Dutch player was offside on the second goal (to me he looked level with the NTL defender when the balls was struck) but I'm glad the Oranje got another goal so there wasn't any question. I was *not* happy that they let off the gas right at the end and let Uruguay score to come within 1. Bad defending, bad overconfidence, bad not to have made it 4 or 5. But we got through. :-)

And, since the Globetrotter asked, having now seen Suarez's handball in the Uruguay-Ghana game, I think the sending off was exactly the right thing to do, and I think the coach and his teammates, Ian Darke, and some of the posters that I've seen on the Net should be ashamed of themselves, deeply ashamed, for saying that it was a perfectly legitimate thing to do. It's cheating, plain and simple, and no one should think that's cool, or a legitimate thing to do, or an acceptable "tactical" move. It's loathsome, underhanded, and brings the game into disrepute.

I may have to take a very long lunch tomorrow...
