Jun. 19th, 2010 11:10 amJust finished watching yesterday's England-Algeria match.
I have to say I think that's an excellent result. England are even on points with us but have scored fewer goals, so chances are that if it comes down to both of us winning our last games, we will likely go ahead of them.
And while Algeria continue to look strong, with some fast wings, good passing, and good defending, they are totally crap at shooting. The weakest point of the US team, I think, is the number of goals we give away, so if we can keep up a good rate of scoring, defend tolerably, and if Algeria shoot as poorly as usual, we have a good chance of beating them.
I see a strong possibility of Slovenia and the US going through, which would be truly humbling for England. Having watched both of their matches so far, I have to say that England is vindicating my prediction: they are always less than the sum of their parts. It doesn't seem to matter who coaches them or what players he includes, it's always the same--startling underperformance by a side filled with star players.
