Study finds that children of lesbians have fewer behavioral problems

But of course, the study must be flawed, a supporter of "biblical values"* said, because its finding that children don't necessarily need parents of both genders "just defies common sense and reality."

In other words, don't confuse me with science--I already know what the truth is, and it won't stand up to testing...

Although the survey gives a result that doesn't surprise me, I would not be being objective if I did not criticise studies where I like the results as well as those where I don't.

The sampling method is open to question as it wasn't random. There is also plenty of evidence that studies of every kind tend to bias towards the results the sponsors want.

I'd like to see a similar study sponsored by a neutral or even hostile party that looked at all children in a specific area who were born to lesbian parents (married or unmarried). (A self-selected sample responding to a questionnaire is likely to be above average in this kind of case.)

I wouldn't have thought it would be too difficult to do where there are donor records to show that the children were conceived by lesbians.

Of course, there is an alternative explanation as well - lesbians select their sperm donors. It may be that they choose well-adjusted men with above average genes.

I would make all these criticisms if a study had been done showing that heterosexual women recruited in a similar manner by a study backed by a church had produced the opposite result.

I'm torn between making a snarky comment about biblical values and selling your children into slavery (it's in Leviticus) and making a sad comment about how apparently some people missed the "love your neighbor" bit...

Yes, I'd originally left the asterisk intending to make just such a snarky comment myself. Isn't it funny how when people of that ilk don't want to stone someone to death for adultery, they say "Oh, Jesus's sacrifice replaced the Old Covenant with the New Covenant--none of those old laws apply," but when they want to condemn homosexuality, Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13 are still valid, and if they want to condemn Wiccans, both Leviticus and Deuteronomy are part of their moral code.

It makes me want to stone them for wearing poly-cotton blends.

I've never kept milk/meat kosher, so I always enjoy, when some of the guys bring out matzoh to the tailgates during soccer season, having a good matzoh cheeseburger. :-)
