words of wisdom

Thanks to
robbysmomfor pointing me to this. Despite the silliness, this is really a very good commencement address, IMO. If I could remember what Dr. Brzezinski or Neal Simon or Stephen Jay Gould said to my class or the ones before it whose matriculation or commencement exercises I attended, I would make a thoughtful comparison. Alas, those memories ahve gone the way of quadratic equations and BASIC programming skills. So I'll just agree with Mr Stewart (sorry, Dr Stewart) that life outside William and Mary (or indeed Williams, or almsot any other college) is not surrounded by three-foot-high brick walls.

Date: 2004-06-11 08:19 pm (UTC)My W&M graduation featured Margaret Thatcher, then-Chancellor of the College. She gave a lovely speech on the value and importance of a liberal arts education, and how it helps prepare one for the world. She agrees with many professors/secondary school teachers I had: by teaching students how to think, the liberal arts education prepares them to learn anything they choose, be it technical or in the humanities. She has a natural sciences degree, which required philosophy and literature as well as science and math.
