It being Twelfth Night, I took down my Xmas decorations (mini fake tree with baubles, fairy lights, Xmas stocking). The living room looks very sad without their cheery glow. Bare. Joyless. :-( Ah, well, it's January...

Plus, I think I need to have my friends downstairs up for cake and lambs wool. They invited me down for King Cake last year, and I got the "king" in my slice (I'd be hard pressed to say it brought me luck in 2009, though...)

Mine (well, not the tree which had to come down before New Year's) will come down today, being the 6th. Woe!! It'll be so boring undecorated!

This sounds familiar! I'd never heard of this until a week ago but the "Hot Breads" bakery in Pondicherry had a big poster up explaining all about the Galette Des Rois, which has something special hidden in one slice. The youngest person gets to choose who gets which slice, and whoever gets the special slice gets to be King or Queen, and choose their Queen or King by dropping the token into their choice's glass. Apparently the galette is made of flaky pastry round Paris but brioche further south. Is this anything like your King Cake?

Hey, you're lucky they didn't know enough about old folk practices to sacrifice you at midsummer. (That being the traditional "reward" for getting the bean, along with getting to be the "Winter King" for six months and cavort with all the village maidens.)
