two things I haven't mentioned lately

Birds and my iPod.

I was half asleep the other night, about to turn off the light, when I heard a very distinctive bird call outside. I got my iPod, turned on my bird program, and checked to see if it was the call of the night herons that one of my neighbours introduced me to last year.

Nope. Checked the owls. Sure enough, it was an Eastern screech-owl. I listened to the (live) bird for a while more before I fell asleep.

I love learning about birds. I love my iPod.

What app are you using for bird id?

I use iBird. It would not be exaggerating much to say that iBird was one of the major reasons I got an iPod. I've found lots of reasons to like it since then, but I mainly got it because I wanted a pocket e-guide to birds and given how expensive they are, I wanted to get a PDA that could run a bird app plus other stuff.

There's iBird which is calls plus a huge raft of other stuff. It has drawings, photos, maps of ranges, descriptions broken down into differencing factors, and a search function that allows you to narrow down by location, size, shape, colours... It's great!

I do. I still waffle about whether I should have gotten an iPhone instead, but I can take this into work and listen to music, make notes, check my calendar. It's really super handy!
