It's working relatively succesfully in Britain, where you can pick either New Labour or New Conservatives who have tied themselves pretty tightly to the middle ground (and caused the Independence Party and Real Labour Party to be formed on the fringes)
They're not, they're the Labour Party, and Conservative Party, with the old farts, old ideas (such as Clause 4) removed. We already know how old parliamentarians such as Tony Benn and Margaret Thatcher feel about how both parties have betrayed their roots (some of us might say they logically evolved).
