So, I turn up at the dentist's office expecting to get a 6-month teeth cleaning and discover that, no, they are all set to do two more of the large quantity of repair work they've determined I need. *sigh* Well, all the fillings are done now, and they did one of the "bondings" that they identified as necessary, and they say they can do the other three when I come back next month for the cleaning. Theoretically I'll then be all done.

A nice weekend, on the whole, marred somewhat by this stupid cold, which is still lingering. Saturday saw me at [livejournal.com profile] john_arundel's, playing Warhammer 40K with him and our friend Bryan, messing around with the kids (Ethan rolled some dice for his dad, and brought his reinforcements in just in time to mow down a lot of Bryan's troops), and having a nice cookout after the game. Bryan had brough some huge steaks, I brought some ice cream, and we all contributed tot he huge pile of empty beer bottles that Ethan kept counting with increasing awe. Finished the evening with a couple of episodes of "Coupling".

Sunday I lazed around, then went off to get a full-body massage, courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] redactrice (there, two years later, I've finally used your gift certificate! ;-), then had dinner and played more games with her and [livejournal.com profile] shy_kat at the home of the ever-gracious [livejournal.com profile] poliscidiva. Delicious food, good company, games, and cats: what better evening could one have?

I had a bit of trouble getting to sleep, what with coughing and so on from the cold. I ended up sleeping for about five hours and waking from a dream in which I was having trouble with my job as manager of a huge hardware store. Cats came and sniffed me for a while in a friendly way, then curled up when they realized it was a little too early to demand breakfast; eventually I got back to sleep and got another hour or so of rest.

Oh, and I did get a chance to watch The Girl in the Cafe over the weekend. Another good film by Richard Curtis; maybe it's the idealist in me, maybe it's my fondness for Bill Nighy (he's such an irresitable scruff) or the tremendous crush I have on Kelly Macdonald (she really is tremendously lovely, and her lovely Scots accent just makes me swoon). The two of them did a tremendous job together in the miniseries "State of Play"; this isn't as complex a plot, just fairly simple and sweet. Nighy is usually playing some larger than life rascal; seeing him play (well) someone painfully shy and withdrawn shows me how wide his range really is. Ken Stott (another good Scots actor) gets a small role; I'm fond of him, and I don't think he's had as many opportunities to shine as he deserves.

///Love/// Ken Stott. He starred in what is one of, to my mind, the BBC's finest dramas, a 6 part series called "Taking Over the Asylum" where KS plays a DJ for a hospital radio station in a mental ward. If you ever ever evre get a chance to see it (I am keeping my fingers crossed for a DVD release one day) then do it, it was just amazing and Ken Stott was incredible in it.
