Rocky came over today and we had a Revolutionary War set-to, an encounter in which a large portion of the Pennsylvania Line of 1777 backed by several helpings of militia and state troops faced off against a reinforced brigade of British infantry and dragoons with artillery support.

The Americans held a couple of small towns with infantry and artillery. The British decided to weight their right flank, since the town nearest it was screened by woods and seemed to be held by a militia force rather than Continentals. The dragoons and two battalions of the 42nd Foot advanced through the woods, while a battalion of light infantry covered the rest of the British force, with three battalions of British foot and one of American Loyalists constituting the cernter and left of the British advance.

The British pressed in the American skirmishers, though a regiment or two kept shifting around the British left, trying to enfilade their advancing lines. The lights made several bayonet charges and drove the American center back on the main occupied town. Slow to complete their approach, the Highlanders stormed the village facing them and drove its defenders in headlong flight. The Scots then began rolling back the Americans' left wing and pushing for entry into the central defense of the Americna line.

The lights took a heavy pounding from American musketry and artillery fire, and the Loyalists routed under the constant harrasment of the infantry and artillery of the Americna right wing. Eventually the Americans were bold enough to make several attack of their own, figuring that the British troops, who had made a fw unsuccessful attacks on the Continental center, might be ripe for defeat. The American attack was repulsed, and the 42nd broke through the New Jersey troops that Stirling had psoted to hold his central defenses. With the bagpipes playing the Black Watch through the town and the better part of four brigades in full retreat, the Americans withdrew from the field.

This is the first time that I recall that I've actually beaten Rcoky at Fortunes of War, so I feel rather like the apprentice whose finally made it to journeyman. Heck, it's only been, what, 15 years? 20? I may finally have a decent grasp of the game.

Victory over Rocky on his home turf (gamewise and periodwise) is a victory indeed! And doubly sweet that it was our own brave regiment that carried much of the day!

Up the Watch!
